Courier-Times article for September 27, 2014 - "Understand what is Really Happening"

Understand what is Really Happening

In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. (2 Corinthians 4:4 and Romans 1:21 ESV)

A couple of comedic singers called “The Flight of the Conchords” had a song called I’m Not Crying in which a guy is explaining the many reasons one might think he is crying while he repeatedly claims he is not. Here are a few of the lines:

I'm not crying, not crying, not crying
I'm not crying, it's just been raining on my face

I'm not crying, no, I'm not crying
And if I am crying, it's not because of you
It's because I'm thinking about a friend of mine
You don't know who is dying, that's right, dying
These aren't tears of sadness because you're leaving me
I've just been cutting onions, I'm making a lasagna for one

Oh, I'm not crying, no
There's just a little bit of dust in my eye
That's from the path that you made when you said your goodbye
I'm not weeping 'cause you won't be here to hold my hand
For your information, there's an inflammation in my tear gland

I'm not upset because you left me this way
My eyes are just a little sweaty today

You get the picture, right? He’s crying. No matter how many excuses this poor, lowly, lonely, brokenhearted fellow makes, nor how many protests he proffers, he’s crying. He can attempt to deny with his words, but the tears are flowing. Not only is he crying, but he is indeed crying over the one thing he asserts he is not crying over; his laments his lost lady!

This silly song helps me a make a point today. There is a spiritual war going on, and no matter how much we ignore it, no matter how much we disdain it, no matter how much we pretend it’s not true, it is. Furthermore, no matter how old fashioned we think Satan or demons are, no matter how outdated or fantastical or strange or unscientific we think they are, these evil ones are real.

Satan’s master design and main weapon is deception. As 2 Corinthians 4:4 reveals, Satan desires to blind our minds. As Romans 1:21 reveals, Satan desires to darken our hearts. His plan in these things is to cause us not to recognize God that we might not know Him; that’s his desire in working on our minds. Likewise, Satan works on our hearts, that we might not have affection for God or to place other things in front of Him in our affections. Putting it plainly, Satan does not want us to know God or care for Him!

Satan’s main target is always leadership. Whoever is the front of whatever is who the enemy is going for first! Friend, you take a good honest look around this country and see how many households have not fathers in them! God ordained husbands/dads to lead their homes, and Satan is winning that battle decidedly! Husbands are to loving their wives as Christ loved the church and raising their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Instead, we are struck dumb in the pursuit of success, leisure and hobbies and have abdicated our God-given call to lead our families. Many men are made spiritually impotent because they simply do not recognize God as the Lord of their lives; Satan is winning the American man and destroying the American home.

Satan’s goals are easy to recognize, too. He is working to dishonor God’s name, disrupt God’s work and disturb God’s people. Don’t miss that! Understand it!
No matter how much we claim all our problems are political, or claim they don’t exist, we’d better come to understand what is really happening in this world. Satan is having a field day. There is an all-out spiritual war.

We’d better get engaged in the battle, be wise about our ways and seek the face of God. We cannot recognize the enemy’s work without the Father’s help. We cannot stand against the enemy’s ways without the Father’s strength. We cannot survive the enemy’s war if we are not hidden in the Savior’s care.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Commit to Him your every way. Believe on His every word. He will guide you upon that narrow way!
