"Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act." (Psalm 37:5 ESV) Though we are in a temporal setting, all we who are in Christ are wrapped in eternity, hidden in Christ, and have the Eternal Spirit of God in us. God's primary concern is not the short range game!
I want to share a few long range thoughts to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ.
Number one, short range values and desires disappear quickly. Consider Esau in Genesis 25:29-34. This fellow, in a moment of desperate hunger, traded his birthright for a bowl of soup! The New Testament writer of Hebrews said Esau's short-term pursuit caused him to be "rejected" in the long term (see Hebrews 12:16-17).
Secondly, and again, don't forget, God is eternal, the pace and character of heaven leans toward people of long-term integrity. God will even turn the forces of time and nature against someone or something or some cause that is not of His will and nature (see Judges 5:20). All lawlessness and wickedness and idolatry and all the things against God devolve into chaos and disorder.
Thirdly, our own godless schemes work against us. The wages of sin is death. The wicked flee when no one pursues. Sin that leads to shame, guilt, jealousy, and all those things that are NOT of the character of God are a rot in the bones. That which is not of the Lord is not eternal!
Lastly, thank God that He intervenes and deals with people who are not on the same page with Him. To our cultural way of thinking, it seems rude that God will break in and interrupt us doing what we want to do, but if we are out of fellowship with the Eternal One, it is His mercy to break in and make us know Him and His ways.
Psalm 37:5 reminds me to commit my way to the Lord and trust that He will act. Remembering He is eternal, I must remember that He will not act in what I perceive the proper timing will be, but what He KNOWS the proper timing and degree to be. Long game! We must remember it!
