Creeps with words that seep...
Many false teachers get in and then speak up.
The way Paul said it to Timothy has always
stuck with me: "For of this sort are they which creep into houses..."
(2 Timothy 3:6a KJV)
Doesn't that feel crooked? They "creep
into houses." That's the language of thieves, tricksters, con-men, and the
sort of folk who want to arrive somewhere without being noticed.
The best way to creep in is to look like you
belong.
Quite often, false teachers work that way.
They creep in, often in full view, by saying generally ear-pleasing things, but
their false theology comes with them. That poor theology seeps down through all
the sweet talk.
Through the Apostle Peter, the Spirit gives us
warnings of wisdom:
"But false prophets also arose among the
people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring
in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon
themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and
because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they
will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not
idle, and their destruction is not asleep." (2 Peter 2:1-3 ESV)
Beloved, test the spirits. Ponder, meditate,
give deep thought and research to what you hear. Open the Scriptures and test
what a teacher says across the breadth of what God's said. Watch out for creeps
with words that seep!
