A little leaven leavens a whole lump…
When Jesus said, "Beware of the leaven of
the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy," He was warning His disciples to beware
of certain small parts of thoughts and ideas corrupting their understanding of
God.
His warning was particularly severe because He
was warning them from religious legalism that would block them from
experiencing relational love with God. Still, the principle is true in many
forms.
How many folks get leaven from music, family
traditions, academics, conversations with friends, movies, books, etc., and
allow those false views of God to become their understanding. What made the
Bereans commendable in Acts 17 was how they tested everything they heard
against the Scriptures.
Beware of the leaven of Pharisees and fools
and country singers and hip hop artists and pop icons and fantasy authors and
grandma and the school textbook and...well, you get it.
"But I am afraid that as the serpent
deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere
and pure devotion to Christ." (2 Corinthians 11:3 ESV)
Test what you hear and think about in all
matters according to the counsel of God's word!
