Power outage...
When the lights go out, we get on the phone. In our area, we call Duke
Progress or Piedmont Electric. We get frantic. We don't like being in the dark.
We don't like the thought o food going bad in the fridge or freezer. We don't
like being without television or internet. Many of us are nervous about losing
central heating capacities.
We want results! We want whatever has interrupted our power supply
corrected immediately.
IF that power line repair takes much time, we often become critical,
filled with anxiety.
As a pastor of a local church, I often field calls from people who are
seeking benevolent care. Many of these people are facing discontinuance of
electrical service. They are willing to ask someone else to help; they don't
want the interruption of power.
O, beloved friend, that we were as concerned with our spiritual power as
we are with our electrical power!
In John 15:1-8, we learn that apart from abiding in Jesus, we cannot do
anything that pleases or brings glory to God. That's a power outage! In
Galatians 5, we clearly see the power of God gives us power to have the
character of Christ and without said power, we will naturally do what is in the
desire and power of the flesh.
O, beloved friend, that we would feel the discomfort and become concerned
with disconnection when we are out of fellowship with God! O, brothers and
sisters, that we'd be alarmed when such a state of lost or underappreciated
fellowship exists.
The Bible says, "For God is working in you, giving you the desire
and the power to do what pleases him." (Philippians 2:13 NLT)
Did you wake up this morning with a desire to please God? If you did,
that is God's power! If that is missing, there's a power outage.
Are you experiencing a power outage today? Both in desire and in
direction, we need power. Both in character and commission, we need power.
Let us ask ourselves today, under whose power am I operating?
