Go,
do...
"So
whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the
Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 7:12 ESV)
This
is a proactive command! It's not "Wait until someone does something cool
to you and then you do it back" or "Hope people only do to you what
you'd like done" or "Bless people who deserve it." It's how we
should go out and treat people! It's not a response to how we're being treated.
It's how we are to behave regularly.
Would
you like someone to encourage you? Encourage someone now.
Would you like someone to buy you lunch? Buy someone lunch.
Would you like someone to speak truth to you? Speak truth.
Would you like someone to help you at work? Help someone.
Would you like to be listened to?
Sit
and listen to someone else.
On
and on...
However
you would love to be treated, go out and treat someone that way.
The
very next words of Scripture say, "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate
is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by
it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and
those who find it are few." (Matthew 7:13-14, ESV)
Why,
we might wonder...? Why would Jesus say this next? Part of the reason is
because very few people get that we are to go out and be a blessing without
waiting for people to be a blessing to us first. Very few people allow God to
give them His heart, but this IS His heart. The Bible teaches us "While we
yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly" and "there is no one who
seeks God" (ref. Romans 5:8 and 3:11). God acted toward us with mercy and
grace, not in response to how we'd acted toward Him, but HE ACTED FIRST!
So,
yes, GO DO to others what you'd love them to do you! Go! Do!
