Buh-red!
As
I read John 6 this morning, I'm thinking of bread. I mean, really, all sorts of
bread. I love bread!
I
like white bread.
Sourdough bread... yum!
Wheat bread...
Biscuits... YESH!
Cornbread... OH MY!
Money. (Did you know "bread" is a nickname for money?)
Sound
it out; shout it out: "BUH-RED!"
Some
folks only want Jesus for bread. Some folks want to know God for what they can
get out of Him, be that bread to eat, bread to spend or other non-bread-stuff
where the principle of treating God like a vending machine remains true.
It's
nothing new. In an encounter recorded in John 6, Jesus dealt with some
bread-wanters: "Jesus answered them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, you are
seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the
loaves.'" (John 6:26 ESV) They wanted their bellies full! They were
missing out on what they really, truly needed!
Jesus
continued: "Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that
endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God
the Father has set his seal." (John 6:27 ESV)
Jesus
was saying, "Y'all need something besides food for the belly!" Those
guys immediately point to the heavenly manna their ancestors ate in the
wilderness (ref. John 6:31). Jesus goes on to point out their ancestors ate
that miraculous bread, and still died. Jesus tells them HE is the real bread
they need. HE is the bread they can eat and never die!
How
many of us just want our bellies and bank accounts full here in this life and
miss the Bread of Life? How many of us treat God like a vending machine or an
ATM? How many of us think of God as someone who should satisfy our flesh's
every desire and miss out on how He desires to satisfy for the scope of
eternity, not just the blink of the life?
Jesus
is a Better Bread! HE IS LIFE! Want Him for Himself, and gain Him forever. He
is that Bread from God that fills and keeps filling; that sustains and keeps
sustaining.
Got
bread? Good; eat and be filled...till noon.
Got
Bread? Good; eat and be filled...FOREVER!
